Thor Halvorssen is primarily known for his stringent and acidic, but also incisive and intelligent public criticism of socialism, specifically the regime of Hugo Chavez, and there are good reasons for this.
Thor Leonardo Halvorssen Mendoza, the son of well known businessman and narcotics investigator Thor Halvorssen Hellum, learned first hand the horrors of despotic socialist regimes when his mother was shot by police officers in the employ of the Cuban leader, Hugo Chavez, during a peaceful protest.
His father, the aforementioned Thor Halvorssen Hellum, also suffered imprisonment and torture in a dungeon in Caracas under the socialist regime. It has been said that Halvorssen senior’s imprisonment was all a set up, orchestrated by affiliates and supporters of the drug czar, Pablo Escobar as punishment for Hellum’s investigation into Escobar’s varied and illicit activities.
Thor Halvorssen Junior, himself, has also suffered for his cause, such as in 2010 when he was viciously beaten in a prison in Vietnam. What occurred was that Halvorssen had flown to the Vietnamese city of Ho Chi Minh for the express purpose of investigating various accounts of brutal crackdowns on the cities Buddhist population.
According to Crunchbase, Thor Halvorssen sought out the leader of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam, a man named, Thich Quang Do, who had been placed under house arrest for his religious affiliation. After conducting the interview and exiting the religious leaders house, Halvorssen was accosted by the local authorities and placed under arrest and then viciously beaten.
